I am thoroughly enjoying (well that might not be the right word) rereading Camus, The Plague, with regard to the various reactions of the characters to the catastrophe that befell Oran. I also just finished Voltaire's Candide. Both I strongly recommend as literary and philosophical works on this topic. Do others have text references of authors-thinkers that have undertaken to look at the meaning/non-meaning of disasters?

Catastrophic philosophy

In a time when each day brings news of another major natural disaster around the globe, I am asking the question as to whether, out of the classroom, the library or the parlor, philosophy can be of any relevance in the midst of the ruins and the mess of destroyed lives. Many people consider philosophy an interesting contemplative diversion for people who have intellectual pretensions. Can philosophy be more than this? Can it practically aid in the working through process and if so, when and in what way? These are some of the questions I wish to address in this presentation.

I have been living this question for the past three months since my life was shattered by the worst natural disaster to hit the United States: the hurricane known as Katrina. I lived and ran a school in New Orleans and overnight my entire life changed; there was no going home. In this presentation I wish to illustrate and amplify some of the important writings on philosophy and disaster through my own experiences and those of the networks of people I followed closely in their recovery process.

I will be looking first at Theodor Adorno’s critique of reason in Negative Dialectics where he says, “Our metaphysical faculty is paralyzed because actual events have shattered the basis on which speculative metaphysical thought could be reconciled with experience.” Next I will take up Maurice Blachot’s The Writing of the Disaster and show how, for both philosophers, there is a termination point of rational thinking beyond which one can only suggest a new form of philosophy. What is this new form? I will ask the participants for their ideas of what this might entail along with sharing some ideas of my own.

Adorno, Blanchot, Frankl, Sartre have written about the psychological effects of the Holocaust and suggested ways that a robust and practical philosophy may mean the difference between living onward in integrity or perishing, literally or through living as an empty shell devoid of meaning and purpose. This form of philosophy can not claim to totalize, integrate or rationalize the experience. I have felt this first hand in the absurdities generated by the media spin about Katrina and New Orleans and how very irrelevant it all is to the people struggling there.

The people there and among the vast diaspora, of which I am a part, need to feel hope, not so much in a collective vision, but in the restorative capacities of their own processes. We have all been comparing our reactions and trying to normalize them, fearing that we might stay too depressed for too long, that our sleep continues to be disturbed beyond the point it should, that our panic attacks are not diminishing. The challenge of a practical philosophy is to provide a common grounding and yet not standardize or normalize. Catastrophic philosophy might be veiwed as a sort of windowless monad of an unfolding process.

A medida que nos acercamos al cierre del ciclo, la necesidad de una iluminación ética global nunca ha sido mayor, especialmente desde que entramos en el Sendero de Ejercer el Poder. La nación con más necesidad de tal iluminación es Estados Unidos, la nación más cubierta de tinieblas en la Tierra. Hola, Estados Unidos, ¿hay alguien escuchando? El 2012 está a la vuelta de la esquina. No es muy tarde para elegir el sendero del futuro, el sendero de las Trece Lunas, y abandonar su identidad como estadounidenses. Será bueno para el planeta, si pueden hacer eso.

La nación más rica de la Tierra es la más cubierta de tinieblas, porque es la que más niega su pobreza, su consumo de energía (5% de la población mundial, 25% del consumo mundial de combustibles fósiles, y se resiste a firmar el protocolo de Kyoto), y su gigantismo militar - número 1 en presupuesto militar - y aun así se acobarda en el temor de terroristas fantasmas, y encadena a sus ciudadanos con pesadas medidas de seguridad. Estadounidenses, deben salir fuera de las sombras, e ir a la luz. Deben afrontar lo que le están haciendo como pueblo a este planeta. Deben querer saber la verdad que podrían aprender de nuevo.

“Todo el proceso natural de este planeta está a punto de entrar en caos, y cuando lo haga, miles de millones de nosotros vamos a morir, y las áreas más vulnerables son Estados Unidos, Europa y China, así que nosotros, los estadounidenses, no podemos sentarnos a esperar en la orilla mientras que el resto del mundo sufre por nuestros pecados. Cualquiera que no arda en deseos de hacer algo respecto al problema del calentamiento global está insano, y los líderes que no quieren enfrentarlo están justo ahora en el proceso de cometer el más grande crimen en contra de la humanidad que jamás haya conocido la historia … y ahí yace la generación de una catástrofe no diferente de la profetizada como el final de la era, de acuerdo con José Argüelles, por Pacal Votan, un gobernante maya del sexto siglo d.C.

“Estoy empezando a ver a mi alrededor evidencia de que la profecía de este hombre era correcta. … si las cosas siguen deteriorándose a la tasa actual, habrán dentro de pocos años desastres ambientales de una ferocidad sin precedentes, y me sorprendería si no estuviesen sobre nosotros para el 2012.” (“El 2012: ¿Es Cierto?, Whitley Streiber´s Journal, martes 11 de octubre de 2005.)

Esta Era está cambiando. Tuvimos la Era Industrial, luego la Revolución de la Información, y ahora estamos cruzando a la Era de Acuario. Está será la Era de la Conciencia. Estaremos sobrecargados de información, y nuestras psiques se volverán más sensibles. Será esencial para cada uno de nosotros conocer nuestra mente, y comandarla con nuestra mente meditacional. Sin el control de todas estas facetas, la mente sin dirección creará depresiones, desilusiones, quiebres de identidad, y un sentimiento profundo de vacío. Será nuestro deber, y un requerimiento fundamental de las vidas futuras, meditar y comandar la mente. (Yogi Bhajan, La Mente, p.9).

“Pueden enviarme a la universidad, pero no me pueden hacer pensar,” así dice una calcomanía en la defensa de un automóvil en el estacionamiento de un centro comercial. Los estadounidenses no sólo no quieren pensar, sino ningún otro pueblo de la Tierra está más sobrecargado de información. Un pueblo simplemente atontado y viviendo en el temor, adicto a la televisión de los reality shows y los deportes de las ligas mayores, gobernado por cristianos fundamentalistas, que harán la guerra en pro del derecho de sus ciudadanos a comprar. ¿Pero quién está realmente pensando acerca del mañana?

“Estaremos entrando en la Era de Acuario el 11 de noviembre de 2012. Será un nuevo tiempo … mucha gente no pasará de ese punto crucial. … entre ahora y esa fecha, aquellos que todavía sean Piscis (=12:60) apenas podrán sobrevivir. Pero después de ese tiempo, sólo Dios sabe.” (Yogi Bhajan, La Mente, p. 39)

“Es útil advertir,” escribe Lyubov Gordina, de la Asamblea Mundial Noosférica, “que los gobiernos gastan para propósitos militares 27 veces más fondos que para la preservación de la civilización del planeta.” Esto significa que los gobiernos de la Tierra están poniendo 27 veces más energía en medios de destrucción, que en medios de preservación. No se necesita mucha lógica para ver a dónde te llevará eso tarde que temprano. El puro presupuesto militar anual de Estados Unidos (300 mil millones de dólares) podría salvar el planeta, alimentar los pobres, y financiar la investigación y los métodos para empezar la conversión de combustible fósil a energía solar y eólica.

“La Era de Acuario. La siguiente en una sucesión de eras astrológicas, cada una con una duración aproximada de 2000 años. Completamente inaugurada en 2012, la Era de Acuario será testigo de un cambio radical en la conciencia, la210 sensibilidad humana, y la tecnología. El cambio central de esta nueva era enfatiza una sensibilidad incrementada y una evolución de nuestro poder de conciencia, y una nueva relación con nuestra mente.” (Yogi Bhajan, La Mente, p. 193)

No encontrarás mucha de esta sensibilidad en Estados Unidos. Justo después de la reelección de Bush, la Fundación para la Ley del Tiempo publicó un artículo de posición titulado “La Muerte de Estados Unidos, una Oportunidad para la Red de Arte Planetaria.” La Fundación hacía un llamado para el patrocinio y establecimiento de la Misión de Rescate de la Tierra, las Cocinas de Sopa de Comida Orgánica y Tiempo Natural, el Programa Educativo de Tiempo en las Prisiones, y los Centros para la Restitución de la Mente Natural. Una Misión de Rescate de la Tierra coordinaría organizaciones de caridad con equipos de personas para auxiliar a la gente y ayudar a reconstruir las áreas de desastres naturales, como unos Cuerpos de Paz para la Tierra. Las Cocinas de Sopa de Comida Orgánica y Tiempo Natural proporcionarían a los desamparados comida real y les enseñaría algo genuinamente nuevo, el calendario de Trece Lunas. Sólo los Centros para la Reconstitución de la Mente Natural suscitaron interés - en Suiza, Costa Rica, Brasil, el Reino Unido - pero no en Estados Unidos.

Es realmente cierto que Estados Unidos murió con la reelección de Bush. Los estadounidenses tienen poca cabeza para los asuntos que están más allá de sus intereses personales. Si piensan, no pueden sacar ninguna idea. Un Departamento de Paz no haría el trabajo. Es muy tarde. El gobierno está muerto. Debemos despertar a este hecho. Tenemos que enterrar el “4 de julio” para siempre, en alguna Reunión Arcoiris decisiva, y orar para que el Gran Espíritu guíe las almas de la gente que todavía pueda escuchar.

Desde la reelección de Bush hace poco menos de un año, Estados Unidos ha continuando embrollándose en su guerra en Irak, que Bush defiende a una tasa de mil millones de dólares a la semana. Justo después de la Navidad, un terremoto de 9.0 puntos y un tsunami devastaron partes de Indonesia, Tailandia y Sri Lanka. Estados Unidos fue característicamente lento para responder. Luego vino Katrina; otro desastre, que muchos observadores de todo el mundo atribuyeron al calentamiento global. Casi seis semanas después, Nueva Orleáns es todavía inhabitable en gran medida, y no será habitable por un buen tiempo, si acaso. Al menos 200,000 de sus 470,000 habitantes dicen que nunca regresarán. Al menos medio millón de refugiados están todavía viviendo en hoteles, costándole al gobierno 11 millones de dólares al día.

Pero esos medio millón de refugiados en hoteles son al menos más afortunados que los dos millones de personas sin hogar del último desastre, el terremoto en Pakistán del día 19 de la Luna Eléctrica. Los refugiados pakistaníes, en las partes remotas de la frontera de los Himalayas, están sin comida, agua, abrigo, y ayuda médica, y muy pronto estarán enfrentando un frío invierno. Es casi más que lo que los estadounidenses pueden soportar o comprender. Pero por primera vez desde el 11 de septiembre, desafiando al FBI y a Seguridad Nacional, quienes los acusaron de reunir fondos para los terroristas, los grupos islámicos de caridad en Estados Unidos han estado activamente en campaña para contribuir a sus hermanos y hermanas musulmanes en Pakistán. Los helicópteros son muy necesarios para ayudar a los refugiados y sobrevivientes en las partes remotas, pero no es tan fácil que vayan. (Las bases militares norteamericanas en el adyacente Afganistán, y cerca, en Irak, cuentan con muchos helicópteros, pero no pueden asignar más de 20 para el desastre).

“Es mejor que reconozcamos humildemente que, de alguna manera, el pasado poseyó un conocimiento extremadamente potente. Es demostrable: los textos mayas identifican el 2012 como un año de cambio de época, y el ambiente se está deteriorando en formas tales que sugieren que esta predicción, hecha hace mil años por un hombre (Pacal Votan), quien ni siquiera hizo uso de la rueda, es quizás la idea más potente jamás formulada en toda nuestra historia. Si él está en lo correcto, entonces no es difícil argumentar que su mente fue la mejor mente que jamás haya vivido, al menos durante este ciclo particular.” (“El 2012: ¿Es Cierto?”, Whitley´s Journal, 11 de octubre de 2005)

Cinco Principios para la Era de Acuario

1. Reconoce que la otra persona es tú. (In lak´ech)

2. Hay un camino a través de todo obstáculo.

3. Cuando tengas el tiempo encima de ti, empieza y la presión desaparecerá

4. Comprende por compasión, o entenderás mal los tiempos

5. Vibra el Cosmos. El Cosmos despejará el sendero (Yogi Bhajan, La Mente, p. xiii)

“El líder del mundo,” George W. Bush, está atascado en el fango defendiendo su candidato a la Suprema Corte, la Sra. Meir, una cristiana fundamentalista evangélica, mientras el ex-presidente Bill Clinton aparece en la portada del número actual del Ladies Home Journal promoviendo su gran cruzada: salvar a los niños estadounidenses de la obesidad. Sí, esto es Estados Unidos, la tierra de la mente atrofiada y el cuerpo emocional de un niño de quinto grado. El Presidente es el representante arquetípico de la psique del mundo. Él es el barómetro del estado mental de la gente. Es lo que la gente merece, porque él es su elección. El ex-presidente Clinton y el presidente Bush difícilmente están vibrando el cosmos, y mucho menos, parecería, practicando cualquier forma real de la compasión. Ellos están encarnando un nivel de mediocridad que no tiene ningún paralelo en la historia.

Debido a que es la nación número uno en poder, la más rica de las naciones, y la “policía del mundo”, la mente norteamericana, más que ninguna otra, está en un estado de neurosis desconcertante buscando mantener la identidad del control. Esta es una lucha fundamental del ego. El ego de la identidad personal, el ego de la identidad nacional. Ambos son una caricatura, porque ninguno tiene ninguna realidad verdadera. Son ficciones, y muy dañinas. La creencia en estas ficciones de la identidad personal y nacional perpetúa un sufrimiento innecesario. Desde un punto de vista más iluminado, la cantidad de sufrimiento en este planeta es innecesaria. La guerra, en particular, es completamente inútil e innecesaria.

Lo mejor que le podría pasar a este planeta sería que Estados Unidos perdiera su identidad, que la abandonara, y se convirtiera en un buscador altruista, que compartiera su riqueza, y determinara cómo podría resarcir sus transgresiones. Este proceso podría empezar CONTIGO, que has escuchado el mensaje de un nuevo tiempo y un camino a un futuro genuinamente alternativo. Si ustedes, que han escuchado el mensaje de las Trece Lunas, se despojaran de su identidad como estadounidenses, y se comprometieran a una vida de puro servicio para el futuro de la Tierra, su mente verdaderamente brillaría, y el mérito del Dharma cósmico estaría con ustedes, ¡si pudieran elevarse por encima de su pequeño ego estadounidense! La Era de Acuario, el Sexto Sol, ¡está tan solo a siete años! Como marcha Estados Unidos, así marcha el mundo. Si incluso un pequeño grupo de estadounidenses pudiera mostrar su voluntad de servir al futuro, mediante una sencilla ceremonia de muerte del ego personal y nacional, podría ocurrir que muchos otros, en los lugares de sus países respectivos, estuvieran dispuestos a seguir el ejemplo. Las ceremonias de muerte del ego ayudarían a pavimentar el camino para la llegada de la civilización cósmica, que sólo reconoce a planetas con una inteligencia en evolución, y no a naciones ficticias o líderes nacionales.

“Se ha considerado posible ahora, formar grupos dentro del nuevo grupo de servidores del mundo, cuyos miembros pueden empezar a prepararse para expresar tanto lo fenoménico como lo impulsivo, lo negativo como lo positivo, lo material como lo espiritual, con tal medida de éxito que, a su debido tiempo, pueda haber en la Tierra una réplica de la Jerarquía, con sus métodos y técnicas de trabajo.” (Alice Bailey, Exteriorización de la Jerarquía, p. 34)

Estos son los grupos simiente, mencionados también por Dane Rudhyar, necesarios para tender el puente a la naciente Era de Acuario (2012). Las tres razones para la importancia de los grupos simiente son:

“1. Constituyen el germen de la vida que dará por resultado que la Jerarquía abandone su reclusión a través de las edades y aparezca en fecha posterior en la Tierra, y nuevamente actúe a la luz del día.

2. Son el grupo intermediario que actúa como puente entre la masa negativa del género humano y el agente positivo de la Jerarquía. Por esta razón, en estos grupos el énfasis es puesto sobre el servicio, porque constituye la respuesta a la masa y su necesidad, y el contacto con el alma que incluye la respuesta al mundo de las almas, tal como lo tipifica la Jerarquía oculta.

3. Contienen en sí como grupo las simientes de la civilización venidera y el germen de la nueva cultura. El germen de la vida de la nueva era reside allí, dentro del núcleo de las viejas era y formas. De allí la oportunidad, el servicio y los problemas de estos grupos.” (Alice Bailey, Exteriorización de la Jerarquía, p. 34-5)

La RAP es la semilla de la nueva civilización. La Fundación para la Ley del Tiempo es el germen de la nueva cultura. La RAP es el nuevo grupo de servidores del mundo, supuestamente siguiendo la onda encantada del servicio planetario. La Fundación es el germen de la Jerarquía Planetaria, que NO debe confundirse con la jerarquía de la Era de Piscis, basada en los valores falsos y dominados por lo masculino del poder 12:60, sino la jerarquía en el sentido genuino del orden sagrado de la realidad (el tiempo 13:20 es el orden sagrado). Es debido a lo profano del tiempo 12:60 que la verdadera jerarquía se ha ocultado en la “reclusión a través de las edades.”

La verdadera jerarquía es la percepción de la integridad, u orden sagrado, cuyo centro radial es la Fuente primaria, alrededor de la cual niveles de seres cada vez más evolucionados guían los destinos que abarcan el ser universal. (Hier- = sagrado, -arquía = orden). Cuando tienes una percepción real del cosmos - una perspectiva cosmocéntrica - entonces no tienes ningún problema en entender la jerarquía como orden sagrado. ¿Está un ángel más evolucionado que tú? En lugar de la democracia, en una verdadera jerarquía hay una cosmocracia, el gobierno por la conciencia vigílica cósmica, donde cada quien es igual en sensibilidad telepática y potencialidad espiritual. El gobierno, como tal, no existe más. Es sólo porque existe el gobierno, que surgen las falsas nociones de la jerarquía.

Para resumir cómo pueden estos grupos estar a la altura de los tiempos:

“1. Ocultan y nutren el germen o la simiente de la nueva civilización de la era acuariana.

2. Constituyen el puente entre los antiguos y los nuevos grupos, entre las masas humanas (donde los más destacados se abren camino hacia el nuevo grupo de servidores del mundo) y la Jerarquía planetaria.

3. Serán en el futuro un aspecto de la Jerarquía y de Su trabajo en el plano físico externo. (Alice Bailey, Exteriorización, p. 35)

La Jerarquía Planetaria es la asamblea de seres superiores pentadimensionales (representantes de la Federación Galáctica), supervisando la transición evolutiva del humano actual, del homo sapiens al homo noosphericus. Siempre y cuando la inteligencia evolucione al punto de ser capaz de estar en resonancia con la Jerarquía Planetaria, entonces la Jerarquía precipitará telepáticamente entre aquellos que estén en resonancia la forma y los medios para empezar a establecer una base para las operaciones de una inteligencia evolutiva superior en la Tierra. La gente que está excesivamente apegada a la pura democratización de todos los valores, quizás se resistirá a este énfasis en la jerarquía, pero debemos examinar nuestras mentes y las aversiones y apegos por igual que tenemos respecto a mundos diferentes.

Mientras que los grupos de la RAP en el Reino Unido, Holanda y Bélgica están elevando sus programas de estudio - con Grupos de Estudio de la Historia Cósmica, entre otras cosas - la organización de los Centros para la Restitución de la Mente Natural está despegando como un gran proyecto, unificando a diferentes grupos de la RAP europea. Mientras tanto, en Polonia, un nuevo grupo de la RAP busca anhelantemente materiales para despegar del suelo. En Japón, diferentes equipos de miembros de la RAP imparten seminarios a lo largo de la isla, de una manera regular y bien organizada. En Brasil, recientemente ocurrió una gran reunión de asamblea de la RAP, con más de 100 representantes de los nodos principales de Brasil, creando asambleas, buscando terrenos para las comunidades 13:20, y un Centro para la Restitución de la Mente Natural, así como estableciendo la contraparte brasileña de la Fundación, la Institución para la Difusión de la Ley del Tiempo. Una organización hermana similar está siendo desarrollada en Japón, el Instituto para la Cultura Galáctica. ¿Qué le está sucediendo al nuevo grupo de servidores mundiales de la RAP en Estados Unidos?

Aparte de unos cuantos individuos comprometidos trabajando en pequeños grupos, la condición mental general norteamericana de apatía, inhabilidad de sostener una visión de largo plazo, aislacionismo, competitividad, temor, letargo, y falta de inspiración, está cobrando resultados. Desde el desastre del Katrina, los pedidos de calendarios y literatura 13:20 han descendido a prácticamente cero, y el apoyo financiero público hacia la Fundación parece estar en todo momento bajo. Una indagación acerca del estado de la RAP de Estados Unidos indica niveles adicionales de confusión y una falta total de organización y comunicación sistemáticas. Muchos lugares que una vez fueron activos están ahora aparentemente inactivos, o por lo menos poco organizados, especialmente en Portland y San Francisco.

Sí, Estados Unidos es el vientre de la bestia. La gente todavía tiene la capacidad de ir de compras, elegir algo esta semana, y descartarlo la próxima. “Ah, yo probé eso, el calendario maya,” oyes a la gente decir, “pero simplemente no tuve el tiempo para eso.” El 2012 está ya a siete años, y para mucha gente, eso es irrelevante, o siente que todavía tiene tiempo. ¿Para qué? A pesar de todo lo que está pasando en el mundo, la motivación para cambiar es prácticamente inexistente. En vez de eso, la cultura, como un todo, está siendo “retro”, o sea, está yendo hacia atrás.

¿Qué se necesitará, Estados Unidos, o es ya demasiado tarde? Estás atrapado en una rueda samsárica tan densa, que no puedes ver incluso qué tan atascado estás en la burbuja de una realidad creada por ti. Estados Unidos: la nación gorda, la privilegiada entre las naciones. La hambrienta de armas. Escapista y aislacionista. Todo mundo escondiéndose, agarrados a sus pertenencias. Sin embargo, tanta gente de la calle. Tantos niños en los parques, separados de la realidad social que se les ha presentado, con camisetas que dicen: “Yo como pegamento,” o “La realidad apesta”. Tantos refugiados del desastre. Tantos soldados regresando a casa, heridos y enfermos. Tanta gente en lejanos países, desesperados por incluso una gota de agua…

“Para estar liberados de este tipo de experiencia, sólo hay una cosa: el Dharma. Sin el Dharma, no hay manera de detener la rueda incesante del sufrimiento. Y Dharma significa la acumulación de solamente buen karma, y tener pensamientos amables y caritativos hacia todos los seres.” (Ven. Ngagpa Yeshe Dorje, Tramo Ngondro, p. 20)

En el análisis de la antropología galáctica, Estados Unidos es la peor de entre las naciones de la Tierra, porque la gente no puede pensar por sí misma. La gente ha abdicado del pensamiento en aras de la mercadotecnia, el dólar, y del ciberespacio de complicados sistemas de contestación telefónicos en los que no hay seres humanos para contestar tu llamada. When you become a thirty third mason this book is given to you to read, it claims to have all the truths of the world, I ’ve read it and can say it make a lot of sense, it make a lot of the question about history disappear, I feel much more clear headed, this is a book for a private club of rich people who run the world.
This is something you should be aware of.
It truly is, a sad and beautiful world.
But if it ends like the book says then well it was great knowing you …

MOSCOW - Russia's winter is so warm that a bear in a zoo has woken from her hibernation two months early, while another hasn't gone to sleep at all, Interfax news agency reported on Wednesday.
The normally ferocious Russian winter, the bane of invaders from Napoleon to Hitler, has been unusually mild this year with temperatures hitting record seasonal highs.

"For a second day we are organising extra observation of a female black bear, which has woken up because of the warmth," a spokesman for the zoo in Russia's second-largest city of St Petersburg told the agency.

"The zoo's brown bear hasn't gone to sleep this year."

Temperatures in European Russia are forecast to fall by the end of this week, and return from a current balmy 6 degrees Celsius (43 degrees Fahrenheit) to below freezing.

But succession plans are complicated by Vice President Dick Cheney's poor health and the fact that Representative Tom DeLay, like President Bush, will be summoned to heaven along with millions of other Christians.

WASHINGTON, DC—What if the rapture, the much-anticipated event in which God summons his faithful followers out of this world, happened on George W. Bush's watch? Until recently this seemingly far-fetched question was the stuff of Christian message boards. But with the White House well known for putting faith front and center, officials are reportedly at work on a contingency plan spelling out how to run the country in the event that President Bush and other top-ranking Christians are 'raptured.'

White House officials are said to be concerned by a recent up-tick in the Rapture Ready Index, a self-proclaimed prophetic speedometer of end-time activity that monitors such seemingly disparate factors as the crime rate, unemployment, wild weather and the "mark of the Beast," evidence of activity related to the antichrist. The Rapture Ready Index recently reached 157, a high for 2004, pushed upwards by a new CUNY study showing that the number of Pagans in the US has skyrocketed of late. The "mark of the Beast" category was also upgraded as a result of a nation-wide push to replace bar codes product labels with radio tags.

Who will rule?
For the White House, the possibility that the dramatic events described in Thessalonians 4:13-18, in which "the dead in Christ will rise, then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord," presents an obvious dilemma: if President Bush is summoned to meet his maker, who among the "left behind" can govern the country? According to the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, if the president is incapacitated, dies, resigns, is for any reason unable to hold his office, or is removed from office, he is to be succeeded by his vice president, in this case Dick Cheney. But top White House officials have expressed concern that Cheney's health may make such a transition impossible, especially after the shock of witnessing his boss disappear through the ceiling of the Oval Office.

Next in the succession chain would be Speaker of the House Tom DeLay. But the Texas firebrand known as "the Hammer" is, like President Bush, a born-again Christian, meaning that he too is likely to be raptured. With DeLay unable to serve, the honor moves to the president pro tempore of the senate: 81 year-old Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, who, at 36 years and counting, is that august body's longest-serving senator.

Security vs. tribulation
But Republican Party officials are already expressing concern that Stevens may not be up to the task of seeing the US through the turbulent years of Tribulation, a seven-year long period in which the antichrist takes advantage of the Christians' absence, and makes a treaty with the Jews, enabling them to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem and to reestablish their ancient liturgical system of animal-sacrifices. "We're preparing for tough times ahead," said an administration official. "We don't know what's going to happen or what to expect." He notes that the White House is being helped in its efforts to plan for the post-rapture period by Professor Lee Clarke, a Rutgers University sociologist and the author of Mission Improbable: Using Fantasy Documents to Tame Disaster.

A number of senators have also expressed misgivings over the possibility that Senator Stevens may use the confusion of the Tribulation period to divert excessive discretionary spending, known as pork, to his home state of Alaska. Since Stevens became chairman of the Appropriations Committee in 1997, per capita federal spending in Alaska grew by more than 50 percent, to nearly $12,000 last year, by far the highest in the country and almost double the national average. "We're talking about a guy who is basically the King of Pork," said one senator. "Is this really who you want running the country during a period of floods, plagues and unprecedented violence? The people of Alaska may survive the seven years, but what about the rest of us?"

Ready or not, here he comes
Of course there is always the possibility that the rapture won't happen during President Bush's term, if at all. But millions of Christians, including many of those who recently voted to give the president a second term, are convinced that the rapture isn't just coming, but coming soon.

In a recent poll of Christians conducted on leftbehind.com, the online counterpart to the popular Left Behind series by Reverend Tim LeHaye, more than 50 percent of respondents said that they expected the rapture to happen any day. Nearly 3 in 10 either had unfinished business or didn't want to end their earthly good times just yet. Many Republicans are probably feeling the same way these days.

Evidence for Sumatra 9.0 Quake Leans towards Meteorite Strike

As more scientific information begins to become available relating
to the events surrounding the 9.0 earthquake off of the Northern
Coast of Sumatra on December 26th, it is being reported that the
depth was 10km. More importantly perhaps are the growing signs
surrounding this event that rather than being caused by internal
earth dynamics, as is being widely reported, it was instead caused
by an extraterrestrial event, a meteorite strike into the ocean
having come from the Southern Hemispheric skies.

Australian researcher Professor Ted Bryant had previously warned
about just such an event happening in his book, Tsunami - The
Underrated Hazard. He also `backed up his dire warning' with a time
and a date: 8pm on February 22, 1491, when a meteorite strike caused
tsunami waves in excess of 130 meters high.

Further research for the Australian Spaceguard Survey by Michael
Paine, and titled "Tsunami from Asteroid/Comet Impacts", shows that
an asteroid having a diameter of 2 km would be equal to 1,000,000
MT. Mr. Paine states, "When an asteroid hits the ocean at 70 000km/h
there is a gigantic explosion. The asteroid and water vaporize and
leave a huge crater - typically 20 times the diameter of the
asteroid (that is, a 100m asteroid will create a 2 kilometre
diameter crater). The water rushes back in, overshoots to create a
mountain of water at the middle and this spreads out as a massive
wave - a tsunami. The centre of the "crater" oscillates up and down
several times and a series of waves radiate out."

Lending credence to the suspicions of a meteorite strike causing
this event have been a number of world reports relating to
fireballs, mysterious lights in the sky around the world and
exploding meteorites turning `night into day' in both Indonesia and
China over these past few weeks.

Coinciding with these events was the December 22nd report that
scientists had identified a small asteroid `after' it had passed
earth orbit, "below the orbits of some satellites" and with no prior
warnings as to its passage.
Of course these anecdotal events in and of themselves do not
constitute proof of a meteorite strike but they do provide further
evidence leading to an ever growing concern as to the mysterious
events occurring in the solar system below our Southern Hemispheric
skies. There seems to be coming soon a determination based upon
human common sense that these numerous events are indeed
interconnected and inseparable form one another.

Against this `common sense' however we have a most detailed
scientific research paper prepared by: Mike Sandiford, University of
Melbourne; David Coblentz, Los Alamos National Laboratory; and
Wouter Pieter Schellart, Australian National University, and
titled, "Evaluating slab-plate coupling in the Indo-Australian
plate", and wherein they state: "The distributed seismicity in the
central Indian Ocean is unique, inasmuch as this is the only part of
the old ocean lithosphere accumulating strain at an appreciable
rate, and suggests that the Indo-Australian plate is in the process
of fragmenting into separate Indian, Australian, and Capricorn
plates."

Supporting their research is the theory of plate tectonics. The
theory of plate tectonics (meaning "plate structure") was developed
in the 1960´s. This theory explains the movement of the Earth´s
plates and also explains the cause of earthquakes, volcanoes,
oceanic trenches, mountain range formation, and many other geologic
phenomenon. The plates are moving at a speed that has been estimated
at 1 to 10 cm per year. Most of the Earth´s seismic activity
(volcanoes and earthquakes) occurs at the plate boundaries as they
interact.

Not well known in the West however is that there are multiple
numbers of other theories in contention with plate tectonics, and to
which none, including plate tectonics, have ever been proven.
Independent Australian researcher Rob Kanen, the author of "Plate
Tectonics and The Expanding Earth - A Discounted Theory",
states: "Criticism can be fired at all the theories expounded to
explain the mechanism of plate tectonics."

David Pratt, author of the research paper titled, "Plate Tectonics:
A Paradigm Under Threat", and published in the Journal of Scientific
Exploration, states: "Plate tectonics -- the reigning paradigm in
the earth sciences -- faces some very severe and apparently fatal
problems. Far from being a simple, elegant, all-embracing global
theory, it is confronted with a multitude of observational
anomalies, and has had to be patched up with a complex variety of ad-
hoc modifications and auxiliary hypotheses."

It must be mentioned that where once Western institutions of higher
learning were beacons to the world, and in fact fueled scientific
thought for hundreds of years, we now find (sadly) that they have
now become virtual prisons of dogmatic thought that counters no
opposition to their sacred theories, no matter how flawed or without
scientific basis. This is directly related to their inability to
view life as being in a co-dependant relationship instead of their
cherished view of separatism.

What ever theory is closest to being correct though, and whatever
geological explanations the Western scientific community will offer
about this event, yet to be explained to the public are how the
great oceanic waves associated with this event, and the major killer
of life, are more similar to a meteorite hitting the ocean than to a
sub induction event of a `theorized' continental plate.

As stated by Dr. J. Falnes, Department of Physics, NTNU, N-7034,
Trondheim, Norway, and detailed in his research paper, "Principles
For Capture Of Energy from Ocean Waves",: "The generated wave has to
interfere destructively with the other waves. In other words, the
generated wave has to interfere destructively with the other waves.
This explains the paradoxical, but general statement that "to
destroy a wave means to create a wave."

What we are left with at this point in time, and relating to this
event, are that the parametric equations of these seismic waves do
not correspond to well with an earthquake but do so almost exactly
with a meteorite strike hitting the ocean waters off of Sumatra with
a force equal to 1,000,00MT. Seismic waves, or tsunamis, have
periods typically from 10 minutes to one hour, wavelengths of
several hundreds of kilometers, and mid-ocean heights usually less
than half a meter. Because of their long wavelengths, tsunamis often
satisfy the criterion for shallow-water waves. The waves that caused
such horrific loss of life cannot be described within these
parameters.

Almost a year to the date of these present events, 30,000 human
lives were lost in the great earthquake that struck the ancient city
of Bam in Iran. How many in the world remember this? As of this
writing the loss of human life from this present event is reaching
over 60,000 human lives. Will they be remembered in a year?

But most importantly is the question of if the Western nations
peoples will begin to rise from their mental slumber, their self
induced ignorance of the great global changes presently occurring,
and begin to seek the truth of these matters. Their failure to do so
will lead to the unnecessary loss of life of millions that will pale
in comparison to these past days events. This should not be allowed
to happen.

A friend of mine recently distributed a home-baked collection of tunez with the title: "The Gipper & The Grocer's Daughter: a tribute to Ron and Maggie." It includes a poster in the style of Gone With the Wind, only with Reagan hoisting up Thatcher against the backdrop of a mushroom cloud. "The Film to end all films....the most EXPLOSIVE story ever...She promised to follow him to the end of the earth. He promised to organise it!"

I know Reagan is bed-ridden with Alzheimer's, and Thatch has been in poor health. Are they really at death's door? This tribute compilation notes: "Any day now, The Gipper and/or The Grocer's Daughter will slip the surly bonds of earth and touch the face of God."

Certainly will shed no tears for either of 'em. Just glad they didn't destroy the Earth on their watch. Did not expect to ever feel nostalgia for the cold war, but in some respects that was a truly kinder gentler time.

28 Days Later

I'm so behind the curve on this one, but I just watched the DVD of 28 Days Later. Very disturbing virus-decimating-the-population story, written by Alex Garland (author of The Beach) and directed by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting). The benefit of seeing this on DVD is you get to watch 3 alternate endings, plus one radically alternative ending shown on storyboards.

There are shades of The Omega Man (I Am Legend), Edmund Cooper's All Fools' Day, Lessing's Memoirs of a Survivor and so on.

Can't say it's a great film, but it is a very interesting treatment of a perennial subject.

It does add to the sense of seasonal bleakness, as I wait for the blowback of imperial triumphalism to hit home.

Sir Isaac Newton, Britain's greatest scientist, predicted the date of the end of the world - and it is only 57 years away. His theories about Armageddon have been unearthed by academics from little-known handwritten manuscripts in a library in Jerusalem.

The thousands of pages show Newton's attempts to decode the Bible, which he believed contained God's secret laws for the universe. Newton, who was also a theologian and alchemist, predicted that the Second Coming of Christ would follow plagues and war and would precede a 1,000-year reign by the saints on earth - of which he would be one.

The most definitive date he set for the apocalypse, which he scribbled on a scrap of paper, was 2060. Newton's fascination with the end of the world, which has been researched by a Canadian academic, Stephen Snobelen, is to be explored in a documentary, Newton: The Dark Heretic, on BBC2 next Saturday. "What has been coming out over the past 10 years is what an apocalyptic thinker Newton was," Malcolm Neaum, the producer, said.

"He spent something like 50 years and wrote 4,500 pages trying to predict when the end of the world was coming. But until now it was not known that he ever wrote down a final figure. He was very reluctant to do so."

Thousands of Newton's papers, which had lain in a trunk in the house of the Earl of Portsmouth for 250 years, were sold by Sotheby's in the late 1930s.
John Maynard Keynes, the economist, bought many of the texts on alchemy and theology. But much of the material went to an eccentric collector, Abraham Yahuda, and was stored in the Hebrew National Library. It was among these documents that the date was found.

Doomsday Cult, Japan

On 25 April, about 40 members of a Japanese cult called Pana Wave Laboratory took over a 200-meter (660ft) stretch of mountain road in Gifu prefecture, some 185 miles (300km) west of Tokyo, covering up crash barriers and roadside trees with huge white cloths. After three days, local officials ordered the caravan of 13 white vehicles to move on, but the cultists – who dress all in white and wear surgical masks as protection against electromagnetic radiation – refused, explaining that Yuko (Hiroko) Chino, their 69-year-old guru, had terminal cancer after communist guerrillas had attacked her with microwaves. In fact, she has been “dying” for almost a decade. Motorists wishing to drive along the occupied road were stopped before being allowed to proceed. Occasionally, television news crew members were violently pushed away by cultists who argued that their TV cameras were emitting microwaves.

The cult was formed in about 1977 and claims around 3,000 members, although the real number is believed to be 1,200 at the most. It sells newsletters and books to finance its activities. Members claim that electromagnetic waves are causing catastrophic environmental destruction, including a rise in temperature, and have been touring Japan since 1994 in search of a place free of power lines and electromagnetic pollution. They also allege that electromagnetic attacks are being carried out by communist guerrillas who have dispersed around the world following the break up of the Soviet Union. Pana Wave announced that most of humankind would be destroyed on 15 May, when an undiscovered 10th planet approached Earth, reversing the magnetic pole and causing floods and tidal waves. According to Yuko Chino, “the delicate gravitational balance between the Andromeda nebula and other nebulæ [will be] altered.”

Pana Wave’s doomsday warnings and eccentric behaviour have unnerved many Japanese, reminding them of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which started out as a small yoga class and later carried out the nerve gas attack on Tokyo’s subway in 1995, which killed 12 and left thousands suffering side effects. The white-clad cultists began pulling out on 1 May after their vehicles were searched by 300 police officers who suspected them of breaking traffic laws. Five days later, they were camped on an unused road in the mountainous village of Kiyomi, 170 miles (270km) west of Tokyo. By 15 May, about 60 cultists were camping beside a disused school at the remote mountain village of Godaishi in central Japan.

THE SEVENTH SEAL

Before the current confrontation, Pana Wave gained media attention for its interest in a stray bearded seal, dubbed Tama-chan (‘Dear Little Tama’), that has become a national celebrity in Japan since showing up last year in a Tokyo river, more than 1,000 miles from its arctic home. The cult believed that electromagnetic waves had led the seal astray. Last March cultists were behind an unsuccessful attempt to capture the seal. They have built a series of domes in Oizumi, Yamanashi prefecture, which are said to be capable of withstanding any major disaster, and aj couple of white-lined swimming pools in which they planned to keep the seal until they could transfer it back to Arctic seas. Rescuing Tama-chan would in some inscrutable way save the world from destruction. Any sympathy the proposed rescue might have garnered was destroyed by a statement from the cult that said: “People without the ears to hear will all face death.” The Japanese media said the cult released a pamphlet last year urging members to “exterminate all humankind” if their leader died.

STREAKING CULTIST

Cult leader Yuko Chino was born Hidemi Masuyama in Kyoto. Her parents split up and from the age of eight she lived with her mother in a slum area of Osaka. By common consent she was a weird child. She had about 20 or 30 cats she’d let run around everywhere. Today, her cult keeps a huge number of animals, especially cats.

She studied English at junior college, where she was perceived as bright and attractive but withdrawn. After leaving college she may have attempted to commit suicide. According to one Japanese source, it was around this time that she began “talking to the sky” and conversing with the “Archangel Michael”. In her late thirties, she was an enthusiastic streaker. “I remember her running naked through the town and her mother chasing after her,” said the wife of the neighbourhood association boss. “She screamed in pain when her mum finally caught up.” Chino’s mother was a Christian and Chino herself was baptised as a teenager. After a short stint working for an American pharmaceuticals firm, she began teaching English in a room at her family home. Within months, her class of girls became the first members of her cult, originally called Chino Shoho (True Law of Chino). It teaches a mixture of Christianity, Buddhism, and New Age doctrines.

In 1984 Chino reportedly married one of her followers, although they appear never to have actually met. The marriage was a nominal one, supposed to aid a mass immigration of group members to the US because of Chino’s fear of an imminent Soviet invasion. The unnamed husband, now 77, is said to have left the group in the early 1990s, disillusioned with Chino’s growing obsession with ‘dangerous’ electromagnetic waves.

In the mid-1980s a group of young scholars inside the cult had begun to refer to themselves as the scientific faction and warned of the threat posed by electromagnetic waves and communist guerrillas. They built the Pana Wave Laboratory in an area of Fukui prefecture where there was little electromagnetic pollution. By the mid-1990s, the cultists were starting to dress only in white. “Chino wore a tracksuit everywhere, but it had to be made of entirely natural materials,” said a woman who belonged to the cult for 15 years. “She never bathed and would go off by herself to a car and change her clothes.”

On 14 May (the day before the predicted Armageddon), police raided 12 locations connected to the cult for minor vehicle registration offences amid persistent resistance by its members. The raids included a search of the van supposedly carrying Yuko Chino and of various facilities, offices and dome-like ‘shelters’. Some 400 items, including documents and computers, were removed by the police as evidence. Senior members of the group were to be questioned about Pana Wave’s funding and activities.

Despite worries that Pana Wave was an ‘Aum waiting to happen’, investigators appear to have found nothing to suggest that the cult posed any obvious or immediate danger to Japanese society. Nevertheless, an unsettling incident on the same day caused some alarm when a letter demanding that the media end its coverage of the group arrived at the Asahi Shimbun newspaper’s Takamatsu bureau. The A4 letter, written in ballpoint pen and placed in a brown envelope, read: “Stop reporting on Pana Wave Laboratory. Bolts fixing a television tower of RNC on the top of Goshikidai mountain have been removed. Next time, the tower will be toppled.” Police investigated and found that 10 bolts had been removed from the base of the 30-metre (98ft)-tall tower, used to transmit disaster warnings, although there was no danger of it collapsing.

DOOMSDAY… AND AFTER

Although a small earth tremor was felt in the Tokyo area at the beginning of the week, the anticipated planet failed to appear on Thursday 15 May and the world did not end. The itinerant doomsters, probably somewhat deflated, returned the following day to their laboratory HQ in Fukui, where they completed their asphalting of a tract of land to protect it from harmful electromagnetic waves. Revised statements soon began to emanate from the HQ; a 66-year-old man, thought to be second-in-command to Chino, said the end of the world was delayed to around 22 May. Other revelations found their way into the Japanese press as a former cult member claimed that Chino is plagued by hallucinations, prone to hysterics and loves green tea flavoured pudding, and the head of the cult’s publishing arm (possibly the aforementioned 66-year-old) was said to be a science fiction fanatic obsessed with stories of the Earth’s annihilation.

The hinted-at second date for the world’s end also passed without any global disaster taking place and, at the time of writing, the press appear finally to have tired of Pana Wave’s bizarre activities; no further news on the cult’s activities, or how they are dealing with their leader’s failed predictions, has been forthcoming.

Earth Abides

Earth Abides, by George Stewart, is without question one of the best end-of-the-human-race stories ever told. Stephen King liberally stole from it when writing The Stand.

It is also very much a Berkeley novel, and describes the very library building in which I work.

When fire rips through the depopulated Bay Area years after the plague, the library, a vast granite edifice - although musty and now home to bats - survives the inferno, not that anyone is left who can read and make use of its treasures.
